František Xaver Pokorný (1729–1794), born in Mies (now Stříbro) in Bohemia, studied the violin with Joseph Riepel in Regensburg, played in the Oettingen-Wallerstein court orchestra and continued his studies in Mannheim with, among others, Johann Stamitz and Ignaz Holzbauer. He spent his last years in Regensburg again, in the orchestra of the Princes of Thurn und Taxis. Some 150 symphonies and numerous concertos are attributed to him, with a marked preference for wind instruments.
The Concertante for two A clarinets and orchestra, written around 1760, is regarded as the earliest solo work with orchestra conceived specifically for a pair of A clarinets; the older double concertos by Vivaldi and Chinzer call for clarinets in C.
As the score survives complete only for the last movement, the first two movements were reconstructed from the solo parts. Stefano Furini's piano reduction takes account of the horn and string parts. The editors, Luigi Magistrelli and Stefano Furini, made the first recording of the work (DA VINCI Classics). Preface (German/English) by Luigi Magistrelli.
