Mozart's Serenade in B flat major, K. 361, for twelve wind instruments and double bass, known by the non-Mozartian title 'Gran Partita', appears here in a version for clarinet quintet: two clarinets, two basset horns and bass clarinet.

Michael Nowotny transfers the work to an ensemble of homogeneous colour such as Mozart himself used in the Adagio, K. 411, for two clarinets and three basset horns, probably written in 1785 for a Masonic ceremony. Anton and Johann Stadler, Anton David, Vinzent Springer and Franz Dworschak were then active in Vienna and very likely took part in early performances of the serenade as well. The arrangement shows how often the clarinet family already forms a self-contained core of Mozart's texture, as in the first Trio of the first Minuet or in the fifth variation.

Text, dynamics and articulation largely follow the Henle Urtext edition (HN 9809, ed. Henrik Wiese). Alternative parts: clarinet III instead of basset horn I, bassoon instead of bass clarinet, E flat alto clarinet instead of basset horn II (download). Score and set of parts are available separately; duration about 50 minutes.

The scent of dark red carnations has a strange, magical power over me; involuntarily I sink into a dreamlike state and then hear, as if from far away, the deep tones of the basset horn swelling and fading away again.
